EcoGames goes to Papua: All Aboard! Biosphere Foundation Expedition
In the pristine waters of Papua, where the vibrant coral reefs are as diverse as the cultures that call these islands home, a remarkable journey unfolded starting in March 2022. The crew of the Biosphere Foundation’s Vessel Mir, embarked on their Coral Triangle Voyages, a mission dedicated to promoting a Healthy Biosphere Movement. Their approach? Using innovative educational tools, including the giant “Operation Ocean” game and “Alami Seaside,” powered by ecogames.net, to inspire a generation of young environmental stewards along the coastline of Raja Ampat. Biosphere Foundation: Champions of the Biosphere Before diving into the enchanting world of ecogames.net, let’s take a moment to understand Biosphere Foundation’s mission and vision. Founded in 1991, Biosphere Foundation is a USA 501(c)(3) organisation dedicated to research and education for the betterment of our planet. With an HQ in Bali, Indonesia, and partnerships with local organisations, Biosphere Foundation conducts nature stewardship programs and focuses on inspiring a “Healthy Biosphere Movement” by advocating for clean air, water, and food for all. At the heart of their mission is the belief that empowering individuals as “Biospherians” is the key to regenerating Earth’s biosphere. Through hands-on programs, including the cultivation of biodiverse gardens both underwater and on land, they instil the knowledge and skills needed to champion ecosystem health, recycle waste, restore soil health, and grow food sustainably. MIR: The Sailing Vessel for Change A unique aspect of Biosphere Foundation is its 113-foot sailing vessel, Mir. This classic ship serves as both a means of transportation and a symbol of hope for the remote islands of Asia. Mir’s homeport is in North West Bali and Raffles Marina, Singapore, making it perfectly positioned to sail between conservation projects in the Coral Triangle. This vessel, once a sea-training ship for women, has been rebuilt and refitted to engage with island communities and address environmental challenges head-on. Operation Ocean: A Giant Educational Success As the MIR crew set sail on the Coral Triangle Voyages, they brought with them a great tool for environmental education: ecogames’ flagship game Operation Ocean. This giant game quickly became a sensation in schools in Raja Ampat, serving as an immersive learning experience that took students on an underwater adventure, allowing them to explore and learn more about the ocean’s delicate ecosystems and the importance of conservation. How was Operation Ocean used in schools? Engaging Learning: Operation Ocean engaged students in an interactive and fun way, making complex ecological concepts accessible to young minds. Operation Ocean: The Upcycling Odyssey
Our oceans are facing an unprecedented environmental crisis. Pollution, overfishing, and climate change are threatening the delicate balance of marine ecosystems. Operation Ocean, an engaging and educational board game from EcoGames.net, invites players to embark on an exciting, fun and fact-filled upcycling odyssey like no other! Designed for classrooms, family game nights, or community gatherings, this game offers an immersive experience that combines fun with a profound message: We can make a difference in preserving the ocean’s health. The game board, featuring six distinct Oceanic Zones, takes centre stage. These zones include the Coral Reef, Marine Life & Lore, Ocean & Fishing, Sea Creatures, Ocean Critters, and Marine Rubbish. Each of these zones is a microcosm of the challenges and wonders that our oceans hold. The game begins by evenly distributing Trash Cubes across these Oceanic Zones. In each zone, you’ll find plastic, metal, and glass Trash Cubes, symbolising the diverse forms of oceanic waste. Each zone is laden with the weight of tons of trash – a visual reminder of the enormity of the problem we’re addressing. Fun fact: the Trash Cubes in the game actually are made out of trash! Players or teams choose their tokens – in the form of boats which are made from upcycled trash), each in a vibrant colour, and place them at the centre of the board. The journey begins with a roll of the dice, and your boat sets sail across the ocean. The goal is to answer fascinating Ocean Curiosity Card questions correctly. For each correct answer, you have the opportunity to remove trash from the Oceanic Zone matching the question you have answered. You then set your Trash Cubes aside. Next you need to make your way to one of the dedicated Upcycling Stations to transform your collected trash into new and useful things. Depending on what you choose to make every Trash Cube upcycled through these stations earns you points. How many useful things can you convert your collected ocean trash into? As you navigate the board, you’ll be presented with Curiosity Cards, each colour-coded to correspond with the Oceanic Zones. These cards hold the key to unravelling the mysteries of the ocean. When you land on a space, the player or team to your left selects the top Curiosity Card of the matching colour and reads it aloud. If it’s a Question Card, it’s your chance to showcase your knowledge about the ocean. Answer correctly, and you can remove a Trash Cube from the corresponding Oceanic Zone. If you land on a Wild Card, get ready for a unique twist in the game. These cards introduce exciting challenges and opportunities, adding an extra layer of fun and learning. Each turn brings a new opportunity to test your knowledge, collect trash, and advance towards a clean ocean victory. Keep rolling the dice, answering questions, and collecting trash until you’ve cleaned up all the Oceanic Zones. Big Blue Rescue – Learning How to Protect Our Oceans, One Roll at a Time
Our oceans, Earth’s blue heart, face an escalating crisis under the weight of pollution, overfishing, and climate change. The Big Blue Rescue game from EcoGames.net aims to educate and inspire players of all ages to become ocean protectors. Specially designed for large groups of primary school age and up kids, this adventure game is suitable for use in community education programs and classroom settings. Our oceans are undergoing profound changes. These changes threaten not only the creatures that call the ocean home but also the very balance of life on Earth. Pollution, overfishing, climate change, and plastic waste are among the grave issues affecting our oceans. But within this daunting challenge lies an opportunity for change, and the Big Blue Rescue game aims to educate those that can make a difference. Players embarking on an adventure to uncover the mysteries of a troubled ocean area. In the Big Blue Rescue game you set out to investigate and address dire issues plaguing the ocean. Pollution and overfishing have left the ocean struggling, but you and your team hold the key to restoring its health. As you progress through the game, you’ll find yourself cleaning up the trash and supporting a “no-take zone.” This protected area gives the ocean a chance to recover, allows fish populations to thrive and repopulate, and even rejuvenates the once-dying coral reefs. Action cards in the game mirror real-world solutions, providing valuable lessons on how we can protect our oceans. The Big Blue Rescue game goes beyond entertainment; it’s a powerful educational tool. It raises awareness about the critical importance of ocean conservation by highlighting the following issues: Climate Change: Rising Ocean Temperatures and Extreme Weather EventsClimate change is causing a profound impact on our oceans, primarily through the rise in ocean temperatures. This warming of the seas imperils one of the most delicate and vital ecosystems on Earth: coral reefs. Coral reefs are not just beautiful underwater landscapes; they are essential habitats for a staggering 25% of marine life. They provide shelter, breeding grounds, and sustenance for countless species. However, as ocean temperatures continue to climb, coral reefs are under immense stress. The increased heat leads to a phenomenon called coral bleaching, where corals expel the symbiotic algae living within their tissues, causing them to turn white and, ultimately, die. This is a devastating blow to the marine life that depends on these reefs for survival. Overfishing: Depleting Fish Populations and Unintended ConsequencesOverfishing, driven by industrial-scale fishing operations, poses a significant threat to our oceans. These operations often employ large nets and longlines, which can capture enormous quantities of fish in a single haul. While the aim is to maximise profit, the consequences for marine life are severe. Fish populations, particularly those of large and commercially valuable species, are being rapidly depleted. This not only disrupts the balance of ocean ecosystems but also has unintended consequences. For instance, when large predators like sharks are removed from the food chain, it can lead to an explosion in the populations of their prey, which can then have cascading effects on the entire ecosystem. Plastic Pollution: Turning the Ocean into a Plastic SoupThe issue of plastic pollution in our oceans has reached a critical point. Excessive plastic waste is suffocating the marine environment, effectively turning vast stretches of the ocean into a plastic soup. This plastic pollution poses multiple threats to marine life and ecosystems. Firstly, marine animals often mistake plastic debris for food. Seabirds, turtles, fish, and other creatures ingest plastic particles, which can lead to injury, malnutrition, and even death. The toxins present in plastics can leach into the marine food web, potentially harming species all the way up to humans who consume seafood. Secondly, plastics take hundreds of years to break down in the marine environment. As a result, plastic waste accumulates on coastlines, clogs waterways, and damages sensitive habitats. Microplastics, tiny fragments of broken-down plastic, have infiltrated even the most remote and pristine areas of the ocean, further exacerbating the problem. Agricultural Runoff: The Creation of Dead Zones Chemicals from agricultural activities, such as fertilisers and pesticides, pose another significant threat to our oceans. These chemicals find their way into rivers and water systems, eventually reaching the sea. This influx of agricultural runoff creates what are known as “dead zones” in the oceans. Dead zones are areas where oxygen levels in the water have become so low that marine life can no longer survive. This depletion of oxygen, known as hypoxia, is a direct consequence of excessive nutrient loading from agricultural runoff. Algal blooms fueled by these nutrients consume available oxygen when they decompose, leaving little to sustain other marine organisms. These dead zones disrupt entire ecosystems, harm fisheries, and threaten the livelihoods of coastal communities that depend on healthy oceans for their sustenance. Moreover, the expansion of dead zones is an alarming indicator of the negative impacts of human activities on our oceans and underscores the urgent need for sustainable agricultural practices. The Big Blue Ocean game also introduces the concept of “no-take zones” as a solution to the overfishing crisis. By protecting these areas, fish populations can thrive, and their surplus spills over into other open fishing zones. Scientists suggest that establishing these zones in one-third of coastal seas could provide us with all the fish we need sustainably. And hey guess what? The player tokens used in Bli Blue Rescue are actually made from upcycled ocean trash! The Big Blue Rescue game doesn’t end with the final roll of the die; it’s a call to action. Here are some of the practical steps to protect our oceans that the game introduces: The Big Blue Ocean game also introduces the concept of “no-take zones” as a solution to the overfishing crisis.
